Critical Essays may be expository, persuasive, or literary but has analysis as it's function.

Descriptive Sketch: A verbal creation of a person, place or object. Plot development and conflict resolution are not permitted. Minimum dialogue is permitted to only enhance description of person, place or object. This is not constructed like a short story. Pure description.

Personal Narrative: A real personal experience with emphasis on how that experience has an affect on the writer. It should incorporate real characters, real places, and actual events. The writer must substitute names of people and locations to avoid identifying his or her own school. Dialogue and description may be included.

Poetry: Any structure or free verse. No requirements

Short Fiction: A short fictional story. Must be double spaced with a 3,000 word limit.

Drama: A short scene or sketch written for stage performance containing a list of characters, description of setting, stage directions, and dialogue between two or more characters. Should include character development, conflict, and resolution. May be humorous or serious. There cannot be any scene changes, although unit settings may be used. Time lapses can be included if they are incorporated using logical dramatic conventions. Floor plan, sketches of the scene, costume description, and information on special lighting may be included, but not required. Radio plays, television plays, and film scripts are not eligible for this category.
